John Smith Hurt (March 8, – November 2, ), better known as Mississippi John Hurt, was an American country blues singer and guitarist. Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of worked as a sharecropper and began playing at dances and parties, singing to a melodious fingerpicked accompaniment.

Hurt got in one more full album, The Immortal Mississippi John Hurt, released posthumously, but even better was the record assembled from his final sessions, Last Sessions, also issued after his death; these songs broke new lyrical ground, and showed Hurt's voice and guitar to be as strong as ever, just months before his death.

Mississippi John Hurt’s Music John Hurt was born in Teoc, Mississippi inbut lived most of his life in Avalon, Mississippi. Inafter being recommended for recording by his neighbors, fiddler Willie Narmour and guitarist Shell Smith, John Hurt recorded 13 songs for O keh Records.

This book covers most if not all of Mississippi John Hurt's songs (26 songs total). This is essentially the same book as the older Stefan Grossman's Masters of Country Blues Guitar, The Music of Mississippi John Hurt, Edited by Aaron Stang.
